Asustek, Pegatron Report Outshining Sales in June

2011/08/11 | By Ken Liu

Taipei, Aug. 11, 2011 (CENS)--Although June is usually a lukewarm month for the electronics industry, Asustek Computer Inc. and Pegatron Corp. still reported brilliant sales for the month, with Asustek's NT$28.2 billion (US$974.4 million) hitting the year's high and Pegatron's NT$45.6 billion (US$1.5 billion) reaching an all-time high in its history.

Asustek's revenue result for June represented a 17% increase from a month earlier and a 37% gain from the same month of last year while Pegatron's showed a 51.7% surge month on month.

Pegatron, a pure manufacturer, is held by Asustek, which has transformed itself into a brand-name supplier.

However, Asustek's consolidated revenue of NT$72 billion (US$2.4 billion) from brand name operation for the second quarter represented a 5% drop from the first quarter this year. Other gloomy factors include a likely underselling competition that might be triggered by Acer's move to clear its inventory backlogs in Europe and fragile economic recovery in Europe.

To minimize the impact, Asustek plans to roll out ultra-think laptop Ultrabook UX21 and a new tablet PC sometime in the third quarter, raising the expectations that the company's revenue for the second half of this year will get a boost with the two rollouts.

For Pegatron, the exploding growth of its June revenue is mostly ascribed to robust contracts from consumer electronics, PC and telecom-equipment buyers. Among the buyers was Asustek, which delivered around 300,000 units of its fancy Transformer tablet in June, more than double the amount it shipped in May. Ausustek plans to ship three million Transformers in the third quarter, suggesting more contracts to Pegatron.

Laptop contracts also made great contribution to the pure manufacturer's second-quarter revenue, swarming in around 30% more than they did in the first quarter this year.

Moreover, unexpectedly strong contracts for iPhone manufacturing in the second quarter largely buffered the impact of bleak expectations of the shipment.
